Study English Online

IEP Online is a great way to prepare for your future at Western. Classes are small, interactive, and have a flexible schedule to help you learn English from wherever you are. You will get personal instruction from teachers who hold Master’s degrees in TESOL and have experience teaching online.

Improve Your English

You will improve all four key skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) through live online classes.

  • Each course offers frequent instructor feedback and academic support.
  • Remote placement tests make sure you are studying at the correct level.
  • Virtual orientation prepares you to succeed in your classes.
  • Your personal advisor will support your learning with live video meetings and study tips.

Join the WWU Community

Online learning provides opportunities to meet friends and learn about American culture.

  • IEP live online classes let you meet other international students and U.S. student volunteers.
  • Advisors organize virtual social events and activities outside of classes. This gives students more time to practice English and learn about Western.
  • Online classes prepare you to come to Bellingham in the future so you’ll be comfortable and ready.

Study Within Your Budget

Every student has different needs, which is why we offer four online options to fit any schedule or budget. Click on each option to see a description and estimated class hours per week. See a price comparison.

*Note: “synchronous” means live video/audio with the teacher and class, “asynchronous” means work you can do on your own schedule.

Our online IEP is based on our successful in-person English program which has run for over 30 years. Four core classes cover English skills in reading, writing, speaking/listening, and grammar. Classes run 3-4 days per week and include 12 synchronous hours of class per week (student time zones are considered), along with asynchronous work.

Note: when students complete IEP level 6, they are ready for English-speaking careers and US university study. Students can apply for admission to Western Washington University without taking English exams.

You choose which English skill you want to focus on. Classes are available in reading, writing, grammar, and combined speaking/listening. Each class runs 3-4 days per week and includes 3-4 synchronous hours per week (student time zones are considered), along with asynchronous work.

Note: these classes count toward progress in the Intensive English Program. Finish all four classes within one year to move to the next IEP level.

Study all English skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Grammar) for an intensive four weeks. Classes run 3-4 days per week and include 12 synchronous hours of class per week (student time zones are considered), along with asynchronous work. This program begins the same dates as the online IEP

Note: at the end of the course, students who have completed all requirements will receive an Intensive English Certificate.

Not ready to commit to a long program? Try online instruction with just 3-4 synchronous hours per week for one month. Classes are available with a focus in reading, writing, grammar, and combined speaking/listening.

Note: these classes count towards the Intensive English Certificate. Finish all four classes within one year and receive an official certificate.
