Introduction to Buddhism

An introduction to Buddhism – one of the great religions of India. Topics to be covered include the First Sermon of the Buddha where he introduces the Four Noble Truths, the Eight-fold Path, the Three Flaws and the importance of meditation; the Three Jewels, the Ten Precepts, nirvana, sunyata (or emptiness) and the Undetermined Questions. A brief history of Buddhism follows, including a discussion of the main branches of Buddhism as well as a brief discussion of Zen Buddhism. Music, short videos, Buddhist artifacts such as prayer wheels, singing bowls and bells and richly informative and illustrated PowerPoints enhance the learning experience.

Dann J. May taught courses on Buddhism for the last 30 years at Oklahoma City University and the University of North Texas. He practiced Chinese Zen Buddhism at the Mind Essence Zen Center and at Buddha Mind Monastery in Oklahoma City. For 10 years Dann and his students completed various service-learning projects at Buddha Mind Monastery. Dann visited important Buddhist temples and monasteries in China, Northern California, North Texas and Oklahoma.
