Introduction to Islam

A discussion of Islam, including major doctrines, theology, practices, schools of thought and a brief historical outline. The Islamic faith is compared with other religious traditions, including Christianity and Judaism. Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, is discussed along with a brief presentation of the Sufi mystic Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Rumi. Videos, music and illustrated PowerPoint presentations enhance the learning experience. Student should feel free to bring snacks.

Dann J. May teaches courses in geology, philosophy and anthropology at Peninsula College. He also teaches courses in geology, Islam and Rumi for the Community Education program at Peninsula College, as well as courses in geology, Buddhism and Rumi at Olympic College in Poulsbo, through Western Washington University. Dann received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from the University of Washington in Seattle (1978 and 1980) and his M.A. in philosophy from the University of North Texas (1993). Dann was recently an Adjunct Professor of Religion at Oklahoma City University and the Director for the Vivan Wimberly Center for Ethics and Servant Leadership, where he directed OCU’s nationally recognized service-learning program. Dann and his wife Phyllis live along the lower Elwha River west of Port Angeles, WA.
