|Term-Based Course||Self-Paced Course|
Start of quarter
Students not admitted to Western submit the registration materials 2-3 weeks prior to the first day of classes. Registration is on a space available basis beginning Phase II of registration.
Students may register at any time for Self-Paced courses. Courses will be registered on a student's WWU transcript at the time of registration based on the following dates:
Fall: August 1 - October 31
|Timeline & Schedule||
The beginning and end dates for Term-Based online courses correspond with the academic schedule on campus and follow Western's general dates and deadlines, unless otherwise noted. For more information refer to theRegistrar's Office Important Dates and Deadlines web page.
Online classes at Western are delivered using “Canvas,” a web-based instruction environment. Students will submit assignments, participate in discussions and take exams on a weekly basis in Canvas, per the syllabus and schedule, as outline by the instructor.
Self-Paced courses are set-up to be completed within 10-12 weeks just like the academic quarter. Generally, the minimum time allowed to complete any Self-Paced course is seven weeks from the time the first lesson is received by the instructor. The seven week minimum does not apply to courses with lessons numbering six or less.
Although Self-Paced students have as long as six months to complete their course work, students who are graduating before the end of the six months must finish their course by the end of the quarter of graduation. Students who use a Self-Paced course to qualify for financial aid must complete the course within the quarter that aid was received.
Enrollment in only Self-Paced courses may qualify as continuing enrollment for WWU students who take one quarter off during the academic year. The course will count for one academic quarter only and students must maintain an active registration on every quarter, with the exception of summer, to maintain matriculated status.
It takes time to process lessons and exams, get them graded, mailed back and forth from student to instructor, especially during the summer months. It is the student’s responsibility to plan ahead and ensure that required deadlines are met.

All WesternOnline courses are fully self-supporting, receiving no funds from the State Legislature. Therefore, tuition and fees for courses are different than tuition charged for campus programs. Fees are subject to change as the result of action by the Washington State Legislature or by Western’s Board of Trustees.
Agency or institutional purchase orders are accepted for tuition payment. Tuition does not include textbooks.
By registering, a student incurs a legal obligation to pay tuition and fees. This debt may be canceled only if the student officially withdraws before the appropriate course refund deadline (see Refunds & Withdrawals page for more information).
Courses in the departments of Accounting, Finance and Marketing, Decision Science, Management, Management Information Systems (MIS) and Operations Management are not available to academically dismissed students.
